Crafted by a Kyoto bamboo artisan whose work has earned acclaim both in Japan and abroad. The material used is madake bamboo grown in Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture, meticulously shaved into thin strips measuring approximately 2 mm in width and 0.2 mm in thickness, then dyed in two distinct tones. These finely prepared bamboo strips are woven together using both Yotsubishi Ajiro and Sangen Ajiro weaving techniques, creating a one-of-a-kind rhythmic pattern. With use over time, the bamboo gradually develops a rich amber patina, quietly reflecting the passage of time. At the center, a handwoven Sanada-himo cord made from pure silk and crafted in Kyoto lends the bag a poised and dignified presence. Rooted in the refined aesthetic cultivated through Kyoto’s traditions of tea ceremony and ikebana culture, this bag embodies the spirit of Kyoto bamboo craftsmanship. This special edition includes a detachable chain strap intricately braided with kumihimo cord produced in Kyoto. Each piece is accompanied by a kaya storage pouch from Nara Prefecture and presented in a custom paulownia wood box.

KYOTO BAMBOO CLUTCH BAG

Blending two types of weaving into a truly one-of-a-kind quality

Paying tribute to this long history, this piece presents a completely new look. It features a unique and innovative design that combines the Yotsubishi and Sangen Ajiro weaving techniques. By engaging with each individual bamboo strip and weaving them with meticulous care, the craftsman has created a sophisticated modernist design characterized by beautiful play of light and shadow.

Bamboo craftsmanship has been a living tradition in Kyoto since ancient times. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, many tea masters—including Sen no Rikyū, who established the tea ceremony—discovered the spirit of “wabi-sabi” in bamboo. As they enthusiastically adopted bamboo baskets, which had previously been everyday utensils, as tea ceremony utensils and flower vases, this unique aesthetic sensibility and advanced craftsmanship continued to evolve and refine over the centuries.

The pinnacle of bamboo-strip craftsmanship, where over a decade of experience makes all the difference

In bamboo basket weaving, the quality of the finished piece depends directly on the preparation of the thin, narrow strips of split bamboo—known as “bamboo strips”—used for weaving. First, use a bamboo-splitting knife to split the round bamboo into thin strips. Next, carefully scrape away the hard, enamel-like layer on the surface of the bamboo, taking care not to damage the fibers. While preparing the base to ensure the dye and lacquer adhere well to the bamboo during the dyeing and lacquering processes, we proceed to work with ultra-fine bamboo strips. The split bamboo strips are smoothed along the edges with a small knife, and finally, the back is carefully scraped to ensure uniform thickness.
The bamboo strips used to make this bag are approximately 2 mm wide and 0.2 mm thick. By making them thinner than those typically used in ajiro weaving, we’ve created a delicate woven texture. It is by thoroughly refining these basic processes—through this painstaking craftsmanship—that we lay the foundation for the bag’s distinctive presence.

The material is “madake” bamboo sourced from Kameoka City in Kyoto Prefecture, a town known for its connection to the Sengoku-period warlord Akechi Mitsuhide. We use only the finest bamboo, grown in carefully managed groves, featuring long internodes and minimal blemishes or imperfections.

Crafted with refined techniques and luxurious materials, this bamboo basket clutch bag beautifully complements not only traditional Japanese attire but also modern fashion.

Blending Kyoto’s traditional crafts to create an urban aesthetic

The bamboo strips are dyed in two different colors, woven into a basket, and then carefully polished with “insect wax,” a high-quality natural wax, to create a clutch bag. The surface of the bamboo gradually changes color, developing a lustrous amber hue the more it is used. The color contrast with the handwoven pure silk Kyoto wrapping string placed at the center creates a modern touch within the traditional design, beautifully highlighting the wearer’s individuality.
Another key feature is its versatile 2-way design, which allows it to be worn over the shoulder. The detachable shoulder strap is woven with traditional Kyoto braided cord, embodying the artistry of Kyoto craftsmanship down to the finest detail. It adapts seamlessly to a variety of occasions and outfits. This timeless piece will grow more cherished with each passing day, accompanying you through the richness of life’s journey.
